The book reveals the racial hate in Natchez, Mississippi during Jim Crow, and highlights the reasons that let violent segregationist thugs to flourish, including fundamentalism, poverty and the brutality of wars in Europe, Korea and Europe.

Maura Isles, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' chief medical examiner and Jane Rizzoli's best friend, is described as being odd and shy when she was growing up. She was privately adopted by a wealthy couple, and was called "Maura the Bore-A" by her peers. She grew up with little attention from her parents and was affected by the loss of her brother.

Dr Kontos was born in Tarpon Springs, Florida, and was a young interest in dentistry. His first experience of tooth pain and a root canal at the age of 12 allowed him to understand that dentistry was the path he wanted to pursue throughout his life. He studied and worked hard for many years before earning his doctorate from Nova Southeastern University. He also spent time working in the field along with other doctors and has presented research results to various venues.

He has a variety of medical and mental health interests with a focus on older adults. He is registered with the General Medical Council in the UK and is on the Specialist Register of General Adult Psychiatry and also has an endorsement for Old Age Psychiatry. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and is an active member of various international professional bodies.
