"Almost everyone in my village has had a family member kidnapped."

A hostage negotiator, who has been working informally, tells the BBC why paying ransoms, although illegal, is the only way families can guarantee the release of relatives kidnapped by gangs terrorising swathes of northern Nigeria.

“This is about women and the control of women’s bodies.'' Despite outcry from activists and survivors, The Gambia’s parliament advanced a bill to decriminalise female genital mutilation on 18 March. The move has reignited a contentious debate surrounding religious and cultural practices and bodily autonomy. If the bill is passed, the country could become the first to reverse a ban on FGM.

A community leader from the town tells us the kidnappers are demanding one billion naira for the release of the hostages, but there's no way parents can pay: "On that day they were kidnapped many of the children had not even had breakfast. Many of the parents cannot afford three square meals. How can they produce one billion naira?"
