A reference image is not an instruction to change every color. Before matching a look, write down what should remain stable: a product label, a neutral surface, a skin tone or a meaningful highlight. Then compare those areas as well as the overall mood.
A useful review loop is to start with a source photo or SDR frame, choose a reference for one clear reason, make a modest adjustment, and compare at a consistent viewing size. Inspect the exported result in the intended editing application before extending it to other material. One convincing still does not establish that a look works across a whole sequence.
